 VTSV EMS MEETING MINUTES

EDELWEISS CONFERENCE ROOM

TAOS SKI VALLEY, NEW MEXICO

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2009, 5:30 P.M.

               I.      CALL TO ORDER

Public Safety Director, Dave Wallace, called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m., in the Edelweiss Lodge Conference Center.  EMS Members in attendance were Dave Wallace, Brian Wallace, Lincoln Landis, Aline Robertson, Bill Etchemendy, Dawn Boulware, Chris Stagg, Gene Mortimer, Mary Mortimer, Neal King, Kathy Bennett, Erika Gunter, and Alejandro Blake.  Dr. Quigley Peterson and Carl Gilmore also attended the meeting.

             II.      Various Topics

Dave reminded everyone to get copies of their certifications and CPR cards to Kathy Bennett for the files.  Dave will get the license numbers from Kathy.  Refresher classes were discussed.  Dave talked about NIMS training and said he would set up a combined EMS/FD training sometime in the winter months, but if you are doing the NIMS course yourself, please keep going.  Discussion was held regarding tabletop training including various scenarios and triage.  Extrication training classes will be held Tuesday, September 29th at 5:30 p.m., at Taos Auto Electric and again on Saturday, October 3rd, at 10:30 a.m.  The Taos Auto Electric Company is located on the gorge bridge road just past the RV park on the right, (before the gorge).  The EMS Conference in Red River is $40/2 days.  The EMS Department pays for mileage.  The class is being held Saturday, September 26th and Sunday, September 27th in Red River.  Log on to ECEMS.ORG to enroll.

The Musicl Festival held on August 15th was discussed.  There were 25 people (various shifts) in the EMS tent.  All went well.  Mary submitted ideas on how we could do better next year.  She talked about the water issue, or lack thereof, and the fact that we were not ready for lost kids.  Discussion was held on providing a Lost and Found area and an Information Booth next to the EMS test for next year.  Dust was an issue and the EMS tent needed ice.  Hanno said that perhaps next year the EMS tent personnel would be provided with a sack lunch.  Discussion was held on the sale of small packages of aspirin, motrin, etc.  Head lamps for those manning the tent in the evening.  The Polaris was discussed; including liability if someone should fall off.  Criteria for what it can be used for and discussion on purchasing a Polaris was held; apparently there is a grant available for this purchase.  Situations like “what ifs” were discussed i.e., hail storms during the festival, 8x10 blankets, ponchos, etc.

Flu shots were discussed.  Regular flu shots will be available in November and we will be notified by Quigley about the availability of the H1N1 shots.  The CDC wants people to refer to identification of H1N1 flu, not “Swine” flu.  Recommendations to the public and employees will be in the first Bullwheel.

III.           Run Reviews

Dr. Peterson reviewed several run reviews.  These consisted of a possible H1N1 Flu virus patient showing signs of chills, cough, anxious, 102.1 fever, muscle aches, elevated blood pressure and a pulse of 110.  Next was an 8 y/o male who was hit in the left eye with a fishing poll.  Others were a patient with a head injury, MVA in Amizette and a 57 y/o female who fell down the stairs at the Sierra del Sol.

IV.           Announcement of date/time/place for the next meeting

The next meeting of the EMS Department is scheduled for November 10, 2009 at 5:30 p.m., at the Edelweiss Conference Room.
